Italian citizens are required to keep their standing with the Italian administration correctly registered and up to date. If you live abroad, being properly registered with AIRE (Anagrafe degli Italiani Residenti all'Estero) and keeping your details current is essential to being able to carry out the main procedures tied to your citizenship.
An outdated registration can prevent you from processing or renewing Italian documents, such as your passport or Carta d'Identità. In addition, in order to pass on citizenship to your minor children, your own standing needs to be properly regularized.

Citizenship for minor children: don't miss the deadlines
The new Italian regulation also changed the conditions for passing on citizenship to certain minor children of Italian citizens born abroad. When a minor doesn't fall under the current cases of automatic transmission, it may still be possible to acquire citizenship through the procedure set out in current regulations — but there are deadlines to do so.
For certain minors, the relevant declaration must be made within three years of birth (or of the later establishment of filiation or adoption). There is also a transitional regime for minors who had already been born when the reform took effect.
